ANPPCAN - the most supportive NGO in Busia District
ANPPCAN has been voted the most supportive non-governmental organization in Busia District.
This was revealed by the Ministry of Education during the ocassion of the Busia District Education / Prize giving day held at the Busia Polytechnic in June 2011.
Since 2009, ANPPCAN has been implementing a Child Participation programme with an aim to prevent and respond to all forms of child abuse and exploitation by empowering children as advocates for the protection of rights of orphans and other vulnerable children. Before the Child Participation programme, ANPPCAN had been implementing yet another flagship programme, the Child Labour programme, that aimed at reducing incidences of child labour and promoting education for all children in the district.
Initially, the Child Participation programme was implemented in 5 schools in Busia but was later expanded to cover 10 schools in order to spread out the benefits of the programme to more children in the area.
In the course of implementation of the programme, ANPPCAN has effectively established and / or strengthened child protection systems both at the school and the community levels and also introduced innovative strategies such as the school based income generation activities. The programme has tremendously raised the profile on the rights of children and also ensured that the rights of vulnerable children and other services is top on the development agenda.
The recognition of ANPPCAN as the 'most supportive NGO in the district' is a great honour from the government and other child rights actors in the district and inspires the organization to step up efforts to ensure the rights of children and especially orphaned and vulnerable children are realized.
