About World of Children Institute for Family Studies (WCIFS)
The World of Children Institute for Family Studies (WCIFS) is the first Institute in Kenya to offer courses that mainly focus on family studies. The Institute is housed by ANPPCAN Regional Office, an international organisation which has been championing the rights of children and enhancing holistic development of the family for many years.
Target
The courses being offered by the Institute are targeted to the needs of individuals who provide services to children and their families; individuals who want to further their skills in child and family care; and development workers, among others.
The courses provide a foundation for more effective response to the needs and challenges currently facing the African family.

To respond to the challenges of the changing family in Africa by developing the capacity to address the emerging needs of families facing a wide range of challenges.

Programme on Offer
Diploma in Family Studies
The Diploma course aims at equipping learners with the requisite knowledge and skills to handle the challenges facing the family, including advocacy on child rights and welfare. The broad objective of this programme is to equip professionals with skills in Family Studies.
Course Structure
The programme comprises ten taught courses, a practicum and a research project. The students will have first-hand opportunity to interact, take advantage of the varied academic backgrounds and experience of staff.
The Diploma programme is characterised by theoretical rigor, emphasis on application and research, family orientation and multi-disciplinary issues-based approach to cover family theory and patterns; lobbying and advocacy on child rights for social change; social research; HIV/AIDS; family and social policy; counseling approaches and the African family.
Admission Requirements
In order to be eligible for entry applicants must be holders of the following qualifications:
- A university degree with no professional skills to deal with families and children.
- KCSE mean grade C plain; or
- A level with one principal and one subsidiary; or
- KCSE mean grade C- or Div III, plus a professional certificate from a recognised institution; or
- A relevant certificate from a recognised institution with at least 2 years working experience; or
- Any other qualification equivalent to any of the above, subject to approval by the WCIFS Academic Board.
Course Duration
The programme will cover one academic year with 3 semesters of course work, practical application through fieldwork and attachment. The programme covers the following modules:

- Family Theories and Patterns
- Child Development and Rights
- Violence and Family Law
- The African Family
- Family and Social Policy
Semester II
- Programme Development and Management
- Lobbying and Advocacy on Child Rights for Social Change
- Social Research
- Counselling Approaches
- HIV/AIDS
Semester III
- Practicum
- Research Project
Delivery Mode
The programme ensures formal study and practical experience in the context of the family. It is participatory and sharing experiences among students. Other methods of delivery include; case studies, presentations and discussions.
Facilities
Library
WCIFS has a unique and expansive collection of books and resource materials on the family and children. The resources include print, audio visual, digital collections from all over the world. The Institute is a repository for materials on family and children matters from international and local agencies. In addition, the Faculty has its own collections that can be available on short and overnight loan terms.
Space
WCIFS is located in a leafy suburb of Nairobi. The location thus provides students with a conducive study environment.
Computer facilities
Students who have access to the computer laboratory can register their personal laptops in order to gain access to the WCIFS network.
Transport
The WCIFS campus is easily accessible by public transport. Matatu No 46 or No 4 will drop you off at a suitable spot for the short walk into the Campus.

The fees indicated below are for the entire course. Fees are payable within a month of commencement of the first semester in Kenyan currency.
